For her first solo exhibition with Sato Gallery in Paris, Japanese artist Ai Natori presents UNDERCURRENT, a new body of work shaped by the invisible currents that pass between people.

Blue has been at the centre of Natori’s work for years — the ocean as a place where life begins, but also one deep enough to disappear into. Faces emerge from blue while hair moves across the canvas like water, sometimes becoming waves, rivers or imagined landscapes.

The exhibition brings together works from Blue and Blueness with the darker world of Night and wonderer, and introduces ceramic figures placed in relation to the paintings through the Japanese idea of shakkei, or borrowed scenery.
