PAUSE | Shun Okada

19 MARCH – 5 APRIL 2026

This exhibition unfolds as a state of suspension. Not an end, but a pause — the moment when a system stops progressing while remaining active. Time hesitates. Space holds. The flow is interrupted. What follows is not silence, but noise.

Conceived as Shun Okada’s largest solo exhibition to date, this presentation brings together recent paintings alongside a group of major works made in 2015. Rather than tracing a linear evolution, the exhibition proposes a looped reading: a continuous circulation between past and present, where earlier works do not function as origins, but as active components of a momentarily suspended system.

What may appear as abstraction in Okada’s work is not a stylistic choice, but the visible symptom of a system under tension. Rooted in the logic of early video games and pixelated environments, his paintings do not quote digital imagery: they push its structures to the point of breakdown. The pixel is no longer a unit of image, but a unit of memory, charged with repetition, latency, error and accumulation.

Shun Okada does not paint games; he paints what remains when progress is paused. His works exist in a suspended state, where forward motion breaks without disappearing. Time no longer flows forward, space becomes unstable, and a visual noise emerges — made of density, interference and residue.

While his practice is deeply steeped in digital culture, it remains firmly grounded in painting. In dialogue with Impressionist and Post-Impressionist traditions, Okada builds these disturbances through a physical, meticulous process, laying his surfaces down in horizontal oil brushstrokes, millimetre by millimetre. Subtle variations then emerge at the heart of the image, where control and instability coexist.

This approach places Okada within a post-Superflat generation, while setting him apart from surface-based aesthetics. Where Superflat favours flatness and clarity, Okada works through saturation, compression and fracture. His paintings do not reduce the image: they overload it. The surface becomes a space of pressure, where digital logic collides with the material resistance of oil paint.

The major works made in 2015 hold a central place in the exhibition. Far from being presented as early works, they function as source material. Excessive and instinctive, they already contain the tensions that continue to structure Okada’s practice today. Read from the present, they reveal that the future of his work was already inscribed within them, waiting to be reactivated.

Born in 1992 in Ibaraki, Japan, Shun Okada trained in painting at Tokyo Zokei University before completing his graduate studies at Tama Art University. His work has been shown internationally, including in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Paris, Seoul, Moscow and Los Angeles.

In this exhibition, the pause is not empty. It is charged, saturated, unresolved. Progress is suspended — and what remains becomes noise.
