SUITOU NAKATSUKA

Each of Suitou Nakatsuka’s works begins with something small and verbal: a word, a kanji, a first thought. What follows is the process of carrying that starting point out of language and into form.

Her training is in calligraphy, and the discipline is still legible in the work — but she has moved steadily away from it, towards an abstract pictorial script in which gesture, rhythm and breath take precedence over literal meaning. The characters stop being readable and start being seen.

What results holds tradition and abstraction in the same frame. The pieces offer a visual and meditative reading of Japanese philosophy, in which writing stops carrying meaning and becomes matter instead.

Suitou Nakatsuka’s work was shown in Paris for the first time in February 2026, in the private presentation of Takeru Amano’s new works at Sato Gallery.
