Sal

JAPAN . 1970

SAL questions the values of humanity and explores ideas of universality and the repetition of history through timeless illustrations and paintings.

A Tokyo-based Japanese artist, SAL is self-taught and began painting in 1996. He showed his first works in 2004, made up largely of graphic motifs drawn from Japanese culture. In 2008 he turned to canvas, opening new artistic ground by working at a larger scale. After a long period focused on the history and character of his own Japanese culture, he chose to turn his attention to human existence.

A new energy has been running through the Tokyo art scene ever since.
