NIGAMUSHI
JAPAN
Nigamushi has been painting since 2009 and is one of the more established figures of Tokyo’s mural scene. His work appeared in Koenji as part of the neighbourhood’s Mural City Project, which set out to turn the district into an open-air gallery, and he has painted a ceiling mural for the Tokyo offices of Facebook and taken part in the Forest for the Trees mural project in Poland.
The visual sources are specific and unapologetic: the pinky violence films of the 1970s, with their hard-edged heroines and saturated colour, crossed with the flatness and directness of pop art. The women who recur in his work carry that lineage — cool, self-possessed, always mid-departure.
Sato Gallery has presented him at Urban Art Fair in 2023 and 2024, and in the group exhibition Natsukashi in Brussels.
