KUNSTRAI 2025

AMSTERDAM 30 APRIL – 4 MAY 2025

AN ARTISTIC DIALOGUE BETWEEN JAPAN AND THE NETHERLANDS

On the occasion of the 40th edition of Kunstrai Amsterdam, Sato Gallery makes its first appearance with a bold ambition: to create an artistic dialogue between the contemporary Japanese scene and the Dutch scene. By bringing together artists from both worlds, we want to explore how cultural influences meet, transform and enrich one another.

Japan, with its aesthetics, its philosophy and its relationship to symbol, has always exerted a fascination that crosses borders. Through this selection, we highlight how this inspiration resonates within contemporary Dutch creation, and how Japanese artists, in turn, appropriate Western codes and references to reinterpret them from a new angle.

We will present works by Japanese artists EXCALIBUR, Mayumi Nakao and Saiko Otake, alongside Dutch artists Iwan Smit, Rik van Veen, Celia Hadeler and House of Rubber. This selection offers a play of echoes between the Japanese graphic imagination and Dutch artistic energy, between pop narrative and abstraction, between traditional influences and new experimentation.

TAKERU AMANO – VENUS REINVENTED

In the space dedicated to solo shows, Takeru Amano unveils his own vision of Venus, an eternal figure of beauty and artistic fascination. For centuries, Venus has obsessed artists, driving them to devotion, sometimes to madness. Botticelli, Titian, Cabanel — each tried to capture her mystery, her untouchable perfection. She haunted them, demanding to be painted, sculpted, glorified.

Takeru Amano’s Venus does not escape this hold. She retains that magnetic aura, that enigmatic power of attraction. But here, she transforms. Bold, contemporary, Pop. The classical fuses with the modern in a blend of vivid colours, smooth curves and an elegance that is both playful and elusive.

And there is something fascinating about seeing a Japanese artist reclaim this icon of Western mythology. Through Amano’s lens, Venus is reborn for a new era, uniting past and present in a vision that feels as unexpected as it does inevitable.

Through this exhibition, Sato Gallery invites reflection on cross-cultural influence, on the way art transcends borders and eras. We look forward to seeing you at Kunstrai Amsterdam 2025 to discover this encounter between East and West, tradition and renewal.
