For her first solo exhibition at Sato Gallery, Yufi invites us into a space suspended between consciousness and unconsciousness — a liminal state where memories, dreams and sensations blur together. Self-taught and free-spirited, Yufi paints more by intuition than by intention. Her practice moves fluidly between the visible and the invisible, translating unspeakable emotions into gradients of colour and light.

Her works oscillate between solitude and comfort, haze and radiance — like the blurred memory of a place that may only ever have existed in a dream. Her palette of soft mauves, warm yellows and deep blues evokes the landscapes of her past: Californian sunsets and Japan’s delicate light.

Of Japanese, Korean, American and Russian descent through her roots and upbringing, Yufi has always existed between worlds — between cultures, languages and ways of seeing. This in-between feeling becomes a quiet strength in her art: the figures she paints seem to float between worlds, as though embodying her own borderless identity.

At a time when we are constantly pushed to pick a side — to define ourselves, to settle firmly on one side or the other — Yufi’s work offers a gentle resistance. It reminds us of the beauty of uncertainty and the poetry of what escapes definition.

Her canvases offer a rare form of stillness — a place to dwell, to remember, to feel. They invite us to linger a little longer in this soft haze, where memories blur and consciousness begins to dream.
