Goro Ishimori’s practice starts with a personal archive: the work of his mother, a fashion designer. Rather than reproduce or reinterpret it himself, he fed it to a machine and trained the machine to generate in her manner.
What comes back is neither hers nor his. The portraits that result sit in an uneasy middle ground — recognisably descended from a body of work, yet produced by a system with no memory, no childhood and no mother. That discomfort is the work.
The questions follow from there and are not rhetorical. What passes from one generation to the next when the transmission is automated? Is a style still an inheritance once it can be extracted, modelled and reproduced on demand? His portraits do not answer; they hold the problem open.
