NORIO MONMA

JAPAN

Norio Monma strips a composition back until only the line and the colour are left standing.

Norio Monma works in a pared-down register: clean drawing, vivid flat colour, and as little else as the image will tolerate. The restraint is deliberate — what remains has to carry everything.

He moves freely between techniques, working in acrylic and in silkscreen, and treats the shift between them as part of the enquiry rather than a practical choice. Each medium imposes its own discipline on the line, and he uses that friction.

The results read as graphic and immediate, but the economy is hard-won: every element that survives in the final image has had to justify its presence.

Norio Monma was presented in Paris in Blooming of a Heritage at Sato Gallery in April 2025.
