ERI MAEDA

Based in Paris, Eri Maeda sculpts hybrid forms in glazed stoneware — shapes that refuse to settle into a category, at once bodily, domestic and faintly absurd.

Her subject is what is not said. Social taboos, gendered expectations, the rules that govern how a body is supposed to look and behave: she takes them on through a material with centuries of decorative respectability behind it, and uses that respectability as cover.

The humour is central rather than decorative. It is what allows the work to raise uncomfortable questions without lecturing, and what gives her pieces their particular edge — inviting on the surface, considerably less so on inspection.

Eri Maeda was presented in Paris in Blooming of a Heritage at Sato Gallery in April 2025.
