Behind the children and animals of Jun Makita’s dreamlike scenes lies something far more introspective than it first appears.
Jun Makita paints worlds that read, at first glance, as fable: children, animals, saturated colour, a flatness and a lightness of touch that place him in the lineage opened by Takashi Murakami.
That reading is only the surface. The apparent innocence of his subjects works as a screen for something considerably more searching — a sustained meditation on memory, solitude and the parts of childhood that do not survive it. The gap between how the paintings look and what they carry is the point.
He is a recipient of the Katsuhiko Hibino prize.
Jun Makita was presented in Paris for the first time in Blooming of a Heritage at Sato Gallery in April 2025.
