AI NATORI
JAPAN
Ai Natori has built her practice around a single colour and the contradiction inside it. Blue, in her account, is where life begins — and also what closes over it. She works that duality rather than resolving it.
Her canvases move between the two poles without settling. The same pigment that reads as vitality, tide and light in one passage reads as depth, silence and loss a few centimetres away. Rather than staging a contrast, she lets the colour hold both meanings at once and asks the viewer to sit with the ambiguity.
The result is painting that resists a single mood. It can be read as luminous or as melancholic depending on where the eye lands, and both readings are correct.
Ai Natori was presented in Paris for the first time in Blooming of a Heritage at Sato Gallery in April 2025.
