2021 is a special year for Takeru Amano. It marks the 20th anniversary of his career as a painter. 20 years ago he had his first solo exhibition. Not in Tokyo but in Beijing.

From June 9th until June 20th, we celebrated his artistic odyssey diving into another galaxy with an exhibition called 2021: A Space Odyssey.

You can now view this incredible exhibition online.

    Takeru Amano

Takeru Amano (1979) is about 10 years old when he visits an exhibition of Keith Haring in a department store in Tokyo. What he witnesses makes a lasting impression on him. Haring uses the walls of the store to paint on, so instead of using paper, the young Takeru decides to spray-paint some flowers on the walls of the local swimming pool. It marks the beginning of his colourful career.

Takeru was born with a pencil in his hand. His whole family was drawing; it was part of their daily life. He therefore didn’t go to art school. What could a school teach him that he didn’t already know? The Takeru Amano we celebrate today, was already there.

His world is unique and childlike, inspired by the Japanese culture of the end of the 20th century in which he grew up. Takeru uses classical, philosophical or even mythological subjects and mixes them with neo-pop aesthetics and often a touch of humour. Think of a Venus with a lemon. Or the Virgin Mary sketched in bright neon colours. It can be surprising to see these well-known (Western) icons, from his Tokyo pop perspective, surreal even.

In 2020, Takeru Amano published his first art book, Icons. Since then, his career has soared, with international recognition and exhibitions all over the world.

Venus in the Galaxy (light blue)

For his 3rd solo exhibition in Paris, Takeru challenged the limits of gravity. If the Earth is floating in space, so are its characters.

Lemons, women, vases and cats; a concatenation of icons in bright colors sketched with the powerful and confident lines only he masters. This time his icons are floating in the great nothingness.

Acknowledging Takeru’s subjects, we are thrilled to present them from a different angle. With the weightlessness, the body language changes. We find more explicit details. One might say that for his anniversary, Takeru Amano explores a daring and mostly an exciting direction. For this exhibition Takeru will bring works on canvas but also on paper.

“BASED ON SKETCHES I MADE IN ART CLASSES IN PARIS AND ON PHOTO’S OF MODELS I FOUND ON INSTAGRAM, I STARTED PAINTING SCENES IN WHICH THE MODERN WOMAN REPLACES THE ANCIENT GODDESS.

AS AN IMAGE, IT'S JUST A NUDE. THE FACE IS VERY SIMPLE WITH ONLY DOTS AND LINES. HOWEVER, I CAREFULLY DREW AN EMOTIONAL EXPRESSION. SAME FOR THE BODY, DRAWN VERY SIMPLISTIC. HOWEVER, I MADE IT IN A WAY THAT THE SPECTATOR CAN FEEL REALISM. THE SHARP CONTRASTS CREATE THREE-DIMENSIONALITY."

    Venus in the galaxy

The artwork Venus in the Galaxy  was turned into a stunning limited edition of Neo Silk Screen prints by Sato gallery.

The print was made in Tokyo. Neo Silkscreen combines several printing techniques such as giclée and silkscreen mixing in various materials like glitter, glass and pearl. It results in very original and powerful prints with a relief.

See some of the process in the photos below.

A more recent addition to the  family of icons of Takeru Amano is the astroGIRL.

Introduced to us for the first time AT THE Urban Art Fair 2018, it is hopefully staying there to sparkle our imagination.
