KUNSTRAI 2025: AMSTERDAM

30 April - 4 May 2025
An Artistic Dialogue Between Japan and the Netherlands

For the 40th edition of Kunstrai Amsterdam, Sato Gallery makes its debut with a bold vision: to create an artistic dialogue between the contemporary Japanese and Dutch art scenes. By bringing together artists from these two worlds, we aim to explore how cultural influences intersect, transform, and enrich one another.

Japan, with its aesthetics, philosophy, and deep symbolic traditions, has long captivated artists beyond its borders. Through this curated selection, we highlight how these influences resonate within contemporary Dutch creativity—and, in turn, how Japanese artists reinterpret Western visual culture in unexpected ways.

We will present works by EXCALIBUR, Mayumi Nakao, and Saiko Otake, alongside Dutch artists Iwan Smit, Rik van Veen, Celia Hadeler, and House of Rubber. This selection creates a dynamic interplay between Japanese graphic sensibilities and the energy of the Dutch art scene, between pop-inspired storytelling and abstraction, between tradition and contemporary experimentation.

Takeru Amano – A Reimagined Venus

In the solo show section, Takeru Amano unveils his own vision of Venus, an eternal symbol of beauty and artistic obsession. For centuries, Venus has haunted artists, pushing them to devotion, even madness. Botticelli, Titian, Cabanel—each sought to capture her elusive perfection, each compelled to glorify her through their art.

Takeru Amano’s Venus is no exception. She retains that magnetic aura, that enigmatic allure. But here, she is transformed. Bold, modern, Pop. The classical meets the contemporary in a fusion of vibrant colors, smooth curves, and a playful yet untouchable elegance.

And there is something remarkable about seeing a Japanese artist reinterpret this iconic figure of Western mythology. Through Amano’s lens, Venus is reborn for a new era, merging past and present into a vision that is both unexpected and self-evident.

Through this exhibition, Sato Gallery invites reflection on cross-cultural influences—how art transcends borders, timelines, and traditions. Join us at Kunstrai Amsterdam 2025 to witness this dialogue between East and West, between heritage and reinvention.
